PROJECT:Coral Reef Protection – The fight against coral bleaching and disease
LOCATION OF IMPACT:Global NGO project impact Western Caribbean (Mexico, Hondorus, Belize)
PROJECT COST: £20,000
CORAL is working hard to collect data on coral reef bleaching so we can better predict and protect coral reefs from consequences of climate change. The results of this project will be shared with the greater marine conservation community so we can all understand how climate change is threatening coral reefs and use this knowledge to help save them.
CORAL is advancing the early detection of coral bleaching and the creation of networks of diverse, connected, and protected reefs around the world. The long-term goal of our work is to help identify and protect coral reefs that have strong chances of adapting to climate change, so that more can survive. Through this project, scientists will collect data on coral bleaching events and probability, which they will use to create a roadmap for protecting reefs and creating best practices for reducing threats to this endangered ecosystem. They will share the lessons learned with the greater marine conservation community and then scale our methods globally.
