PROJECT:The Ocean Campaign – Protection of the Oceanic sharks
LOCATION OF IMPACT:Global, Marine
PROJECT COST: £500,000
Research published in early 2021 confirmed that over three-quarters of oceanic sharks and rays are now at risk of extinction due to the destructive impact of overfishing. The global abundance of this group of species has declined by 71% over the last 50 years. If you feel that shark and ray populations deserve a fair chance, please donate to ensure we can continue to activate change for these incredible and remarkable animals.
Continue the call to end finning and secure effective finning bans on the high seas. We secured the first ever EU finning regulation in 2003 and campaigned for a further 10 years to strengthen the ban. The landmark 2013 EU finning regulation is hugely significant. It allows all species to be properly identified, recorded and counted, outlawing the cruel practice of finning.

With the support of the EU and US, we have since secured stronger finning bans in a number of high seas fisheries bodies. Our Oceanic Campaign will continue pushing for the strongest level of finning bans across all high seas fisheries to hasten an end to the wasteful practice of finning and to ease enforcement of fishing restrictions.
